Bernard Corfield
The Right Rev. Bernard Conyngham Corfield 〔(NPG details )〕 was Bishop of Travancore and Cochin from 1938 to 1944.〔(National Archives )〕
Corfield was born into an ecclesiastical family 〔He was the 2nd son of the Reverend Egerton Corfield, a CMS priest in India, and grandson s of the Revs F. C. Corfield T. A. Anson, both of Derbyshire > "Who was Who" 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 and educated at St. Lawrence College, Ramsgate and Jesus College, Cambridge. After World War I service as a temporary Lieutenant in the RFA (during which he was mentioned in despatches twice)〔(London Gazette )〕 he was ordained in 1920. He was Principal of the CMS School at Batala from then until 1928; and then held a similar post at Dera Ismail Khan until 1935. Returning to England he was Vicar of Christ Church, South Nutfield 〔(Photo of church )〕 until 1938 when he was elevated to the Episcopate.〔''Ecclesiastical News''The Times (London, England), Thursday, 17 March 1938; pg. 17; Issue 47945〕 Resigning his see in 1944 he became Rector of Stratfield Saye.
